How To Make A Latte

Posted on: September 7, 2011

If you enjoy drinking lattes at your local coffee shop, you may want to learn how to make a latte at home. They are simple to whip up -- just follow this guide!

A latte is a great coffee drink to learn for beginners. It seems complicated, but the process is actually pretty simple. The recipe below does not incorporate the use of an espresso machine, so it can be made in just about any kitchen. If you do not have espresso, just use regular coffee and brew it a bit stronger than usual.

Step 1: Gather Materials

To make the latte, you will need about an ounce and a half of espresso or strong coffee, and about six ounces of milk. You can use skim, lowfat or whole milk, according to your personal preference. If you like, you can also use soy milk. Just don't expect too much of a foam from it, or you will likely be disappointed. It is best to start with very cold milk, in order to get the best steam.

The equipment you need are a saucepan (small), a whisk and a spoon.

Step 2: Make the Latte

  1. First, get the espresso or coffee made, and pour the shot into your coffee mug or glass.
  2. Next, pour the milk into your pan.
  3. Heat the milk on medium high heat, but do not bring to a boil.
  4. Whisk continuously.
  5. You will begin to see bubbles form, and eventually foam.
  6. Once you have a good foam, take off of heat.
  7. Pour the milk into your coffee cup, and spoon on foam.

Step 3: Variations

You can add the following for flavor variation:

  1. Vanilla syrup
  2. Caramel syrup
  3. Chocolate syrup
  4. Almond syrup
  5. Chocolate shavings on top
  6. Ground cinnamon on top
